How to select all features within a given distance (proximity) of a designated location

To ‘Select’ features on the map means to cause them to become ‘highlighted’.  This is a pre-cursor step for some other operations in AWhere, such as for running Zonal Statistics or before you ‘Save Selected Features to New Map Layer’.

Feature Selection can be performed on only one map layer at a time...this will be whatever map layer you currently have selected (i.e. highlighted) in the treeview area of the AWhere interface.  Also, obviously, you must have that map layer displayed in the map window...so again, the map layer from which you are going to select map features must be 1) displayed in the map window, and 2) its name must be highlighted in the treeview before proceeding below.

You will perform feature selection by having the ‘Feature Selection’ tool-tip  (in the toolbar directly above the map window) enabled.  With that toolbar button enabled, find the two list boxes (in the toolbar area above the map) that read 'Multiple Features' and 'Mouse Click'.  From that second list box, select 'Proximity'.  When you do that, you will see another empty text box appear, with the text 'Proximity' before it.  Enter a value into that box...that value is the radial distance you want to use for your proximity search...the list box above that labeled 'Units' identifies what units of measure you desire.  You can select from miles, kilometers, feet and meters.

Having designated the proximity search distance, click anywhere on the map (that would be the location of your search origin).  That is, every map feature (from the map layer you have highlighted) that is within the designated distance from where you now click will become selected on the map.

Explanation: when using this proximity feature selection option to select features from a ‘point’ map layer (i.e. to select point features)…that is simple enough to explain…every point that falls within your designated proximity distance is selected…those outside of the proximity distance are not selected.  As for using this tool to select features from a line or polygon map layer...any line or polygon feature that touches (that is, any part of it falls within the designated proximity distance from the search origin)…that entire line or polygon is selected.

(Optional) Save Selected Features to a New Layer: You can now take it a step further (only if you need to) and save all of those selected features as a new map layer (a map layer containing only those selected features).  You do that by clicking on the ‘Save Selected Features as New Layer’ button  in the toolbar above the map window.  When you do that, you will see a new folder in the treeview named ‘Selections’, and it will contain the new map layer consisting of only those currently selected features.

Tip:  Do you first need to import a set of point locations (e.g. customer addresses) into AWhere in order to then select them on the map?  If so, refer to the forum thread below about geo-coding and importing lat/long coordinates.
