What are the basic steps for mapping addresses?

I see several posts here referring to mapping addresses, but am sort of confused about how to do it.  Can someone just list out the basic steps in laymans terms?

Re: What are the basic steps for mapping addresses?

As you requested, I am listing out the basic steps you need to take in order to get a table of 1 or more addresses mapped in AWhere.  Following the list, I have included a short explanation of each step, along with links to forum topics or web-pages that will provide more detailed information about each specific step.  Here are the steps, in order:

    1.       Put the Addresses into a table

    2.       Geo-Code the table of Addresses

    3.       Save the Geo-Code output to a new Table

    4.       Use AWhere’s ‘Import Coordinates Add-In’ to import the geo-coded table of addresses

Further Explanation of each of the above 4 steps:

    1.        Putting the addresses into a table (you do this outside of AWhere) - you need to create a table (e.g. an MS Excel worksheet, or a .csv file) that has one row for each address (with each address including the street # and name, city, state, and zip…each of those items being in its own column).  You will also want at least one column that uniquely identifies each address, such as a customer name or unique ID number of some sort.  Also, your table must have a header row naming each column.  See the sample table in this forum post for an example > click here.  Also, you can refer to this cheat sheet> (http://www.awhere.com/PDF/Geo-Coding%20Addresses.pdf).

    2.        Geo-coding the Table of Addresses (you do this outside of AWhere) - AWhere cannot geo-code at this time.  Geo-coding is the act of assigning a latitude/longitude coordinate to each address.  For more on how to geo-code a table of addresses, see the above referenced 'cheat sheet' or also see this forum post > click here

    3.        The output of Geo-coding addresses (you do this outside of AWhere) – the output of the geo-coding operation should be saved to an accepted file type (e.g. MS Excel, MS Access, .csv...though, best not to use Office 2007 formatted files > see this).  For more on the output of geo-coding, see the top portion of this forum post > click here

    4.        Import the geo-coded addresses (you do this inside of AWhere) – With AWhere running and some base map layers loaded (click here for more on base map layers), you will start up AWhere’s ‘Import Coordinates Add-In’ which will step you through the process of importing the table of geo-coded addresses.  The output of that operation will be a new point map layer in AWhere…that map layer contain point features identifying the geographic location of each address.  For further instructions on how to do that, see this .pdf on our website  > click here.  Also, read this forum post to see a visual example of an imported point map layer > click here

Still having problems? – If you step through those 4 steps and still do not get the expected results, read this forum post for some potential causes/solutions > click here.
